Ilminster is a medieval
market town, the centre of which is dominated by the ancient Minster
Church. The town expanded further during the Georgian period with
many of the properties being constructed in the local mellow Hamstone,
sourced from nearby Ham Hill. The surrounding land is lightly wooded and is designated a
Special Landscape area. Ilminster offers a full range of shops and
other amenities, together with schooling at primary and middle
school levels with numerous sports clubs and churches of various
denominations. Ilminster has convenient road access to both the
motorway (M5) and to the A303, now a dual carriageway most of the
way to the M3. The nearest mainline railway stations are at Crewkerne,
Axminster, and in the county town of Taunton. Bath, Bristol, Exeter,
and Taunton all offer excellent cultural and shopping facilities and
are within easy travelling distance. The World Heritage designated
coastline (Lyme Regis, West Bay, Seaton) lies 18 miles to the South
of the town. |
